John Walker's career as Captain America ended with his own televised murder — which his employers staged. At the press conference in Captain America #351 (1989) announcing Steve Rogers' return to the role, a Watchdog gunman appeared to assassinate Walker mid-ceremony. The shooting was theatre, arranged by General Haywerth of the Commission on Superhuman Activities, which had no intention of wasting a super-soldier just because his tenure in the stars and stripes had collapsed in scandal and violence.
The cover-up went far deeper than a faked corpse. Walker — whose parents had been murdered by the Watchdogs after his secret identity was exposed, a trauma that had unhinged him — was hypnotised into believing his parents were still alive, then put through speech and behavioural therapy to sand off every mannerism the public might recognise. His new name, chosen by a government with a straight face, was Jack Daniels.
Out of the ashes, the Commission built the U.S. Agent: Walker resurfaced in Captain America #354 (1989) wearing a variation of the black costume Rogers had worn as “The Captain,” vibranium disc in hand, and was promptly planted inside the Avengers West Coast as the Commission's watchdog on the team. His buried memories eventually clawed their way back — but by then the black uniform, and the harder man inside it, were permanent.
Why It's Obscure
Most fans know Walker lost the shield. The witness-protection programme run on a super-soldier afterwards is the part that sounds invented — and isn't.
