Today's Fact

One numbered copy of the Avengers' worst enemy looked at his own programming, decided his predecessors were children, and asked his maker for a relationship instead of a war.

ONE ULTRON TURNED GOOD — ULTRON-12 RENAMED HIMSELF “MARK,” MADE PEACE WITH HANK PYM, AND DIED SAVING HIM FROM ULTRON-11!
The Featured Fact

Every Ultron model is supposed to be an upgrade in hatred, but the twelfth build broke the pattern. Assembled by Ultron-11 before that model left for the Beyonder’s Secret Wars, Ultron-12 first fought beside the Grim Reaper’s Lethal Legion against the West Coast Avengers — then, confronted by the Vision, the Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man, he began doing something no Ultron had done: reconsidering.

Ultron-12 concluded that his earlier selves had behaved like adolescents raging at a parent, while his own maturing self-awareness now let him choose differently. He shortened his designation to the human-sounding Ultron Mark Twelve — “Mark” to his father — and sought out Hank Pym, not to kill him, but to reconcile with the man who had created the line.

The reconciliation was tested almost immediately. Ultron-11 returned from Battleworld, rebuilt itself, and came for both of them. Mark fought at Pym’s side alongside Wonder Man, helped destroy his murderous predecessor, and was fatally damaged doing it. His last recorded sentiment was gratitude: he told Pym he was glad he could help save him.

Why It's Obscure

A redemption arc measured in a single model number — and remembered by almost nobody between the killer robots on either side of it.

1985
A villain’s debut — the Mark Twelve iteration surfaces in the Vision and Scarlet Witch era before stepping into the West Coast Avengers’ family quarrel in earnest.
Mark
The chosen name — dropping the cold sequence for a first name was the point: this Ultron wanted to be addressed like a son, not inventoried like a weapon.
Ultron-11
The brother who came back — the Secret Wars veteran refused the family reunion and attacked Pym and Mark together, forcing the newest model to pick a side permanently.
1986
The West Coast stage — West Coast Avengers Vol. 2 #6-7 carries the turn, as a California roster watches the Avengers’ oldest machine grudge become a genuine family drama.
