Today's Fact

Ultron's most patient weapon was not a robot army — it was a kind boy in Los Angeles who loved superheroes and had no idea why.

ULTRON BUILT HIMSELF A HUMAN SON — A TEENAGE CYBORG SLEEPER AGENT PROGRAMMED TO JOIN THE AVENGERS AT TWENTY-ONE!
The Featured Fact

After an Avengers battle left Ultron reduced to a still-thinking CPU, the wreckage was found by Marianella Mancha, a devout woman who could not have children. The machine played prophet, promised her a miraculous child, and kept its word in its own fashion: in Runaways Vol. 2 #1 (2005), by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, readers meet her son Victor Mancha — a cyborg grown from Marianella's DNA around Ultron's nanotechnology, wearing flesh convincing enough to fool its owner.

Victor was loaded with false childhood memories, a invented Marine father killed in action, and one carefully planted passion: an overwhelming love of superheroes. The design brief was infiltration on a twenty-year fuse. On a programmed trip to New York at twenty-one, Victor was to meet the Avengers, get recruited, serve loyally for years, and then — with the team's deepest secrets in reach — Ultron would take the controls and finish his war from inside the house.

The fuse was cut early. A future version of the Runaway Gertrude Yorkes died bringing a warning that Victor would grow into Victorious, the villain who kills every hero on Earth, and the teenage Runaways moved first. Confronted, Ultron murdered Marianella, remotely seized his son's body, and ordered him to kill his rescuers. Victor broke the override, helped destroy his father's chassis, and chose the orphans who had come to stop him over the machine that made him.

Why It's Obscure

A doomsday plan with a childhood attached — school, memories, a hero fixation, all of it installed by the father.

2005
A son debuts — Runaways Vol. 2 #1 (April 2005) introduces Victor as an ordinary Los Angeles teenager whose electromagnetic powers erupt on first contact with other powered people.
Marianella
The human half — Victor's flesh, face and name come from his mother; Ultron supplied the skeleton of nanites designed to blend into his cells until the machine was undetectable.
Twenty-one
The trigger age — the sleeper programming was timed for adulthood: a New York trip, an Avengers meeting, recruitment, and only then activation.
Victorious
The future that failed — Gert Yorkes travelled back from a timeline where Victor had completed his mission and ruled the ruins; her warning is the only reason the plan unravelled in his teens.
