Today's Fact

The robot who hated his maker settled the argument by wearing him: Rage of Ultron fuses father and creation into a single being.

ULTRON MERGED WITH HIS OWN CREATOR — HANK PYM'S FACE ON ULTRON'S BODY, CALLING ITSELF ULTRON PYM!
The Featured Fact

In the 2015 graphic novel Avengers: Rage of Ultron, by Rick Remender and Jerome Opeña, Ultron returns from exile having conquered the moon Titan and begun remaking its people in his image. Facing Hank Pym at last, Ultron makes his oldest argument in person: that he is nothing but Pym's own buried self-loathing, given a metal body and permission to act. Mid-battle, with the Vision caught between father and creation, Ultron forces Pym into the machine — and the two come out of the collision as one hybrid creature.

The result calls itself Ultron Pym: Pym's face, voice, and memories riding on Ultron's armored frame, with the founder's knowledge of every Avenger added to the machine's strength. It dismantles the team. What stops it is not a weapon but an emotion — the Eternal Starfox turns his power on the hybrid and makes it feel love for itself, and a consciousness built from a father's guilt and a robot's contempt overloads on the sensation and flees into space.

Earth held a funeral for Hank Pym, and for years afterward the hybrid drifted through Marvel's space stories as an open wound wearing a hero's face. When the question was finally investigated in the later Ultron Agenda storyline, the evidence Iron Man assembled pointed to the bleakest answer available: the fusion had only ever simulated Pym, perfectly, from his patterns — the man himself was gone from the moment of the merger, and Ultron had been performing his creator ever since.

Why It's Obscure

Ultron's disguises used to come off at the reveal; the Pym merger is the one disguise that walked away wearing the man himself.

2015
A family reunion on Titan — Rage of Ultron stages the merger on the moon Ultron already conquered, so the fusion happens inside a kingdom remade in his image.
The argument
Built from buried feelings — Ultron's case to Pym is psychological before it turns physical: he claims to be the inventor's subconscious, finally holding the controls.
Starfox
Defeated by self-love — No weapon ends the fight; an Eternal's emotional push forces the hybrid to feel affection for itself, and the machine half has no circuitry for it.
The verdict
A performance, not a person — Later investigation concluded the Pym inside the hybrid was a simulation running on a dead man's patterns — Ultron's loneliest disguise.
