As pranks between brothers go, this one rewrote zoology. During Walt Simonson's celebrated run, Loki used his magic to transform Thor into a small green frog and strand him in New York's Central Park in Thor #364 (1986) — a scheme with a serious purpose underneath the comedy, because an absent Thor could not interfere with Loki's maneuvering for the throne of Asgard.
A frog's life turned out to include politics and warfare. Thor fell in with the park's frog community and its leader Puddlegulp, and helped defend the frogs against an invading army of rats. When he finally reached Mjolnir and lifted it — frog-sized hands, undiminished worthiness — the hammer transformed him into a frog-sized Thor, complete in tiny armour and cape, still amphibian but unmistakably the God of Thunder.
The story ran through Thor #366 (1986), ending with Thor forcing Loki to undo the spell. The coda outlived the joke: a sliver that had chipped off Mjolnir stayed behind in the park, Puddlegulp claimed it, and the transformed frog became Throg, the Frog of Thunder — a separate hero in his own right who later served with the Pet Avengers.
Why It's Obscure
A god, a pond, and a hammer that did not care how small the hand holding it was.
