Today's Fact

The Mad Titan was designed as one half of a pair — and the other half is a cheerful Avenger whose power is making people feel wonderful.

THANOS AND HIS BROTHER STARFOX KEEP A THOUSAND-YEAR TRUCE — THEY MEET, EXCHANGE GIFTS, AND NOBODY DIES!
The Featured Fact

Jim Starlin created the brothers as a matched set in Iron Man Vol. 1 #55 (1973): Thanos, named for Thanatos, death; and his younger brother Eros, named for desire. Both are sons of Mentor and Sui-San of Titan. Where the Deviant-marked Thanos grew up purple, brooding and obsessed with Death, Eros grew up handsome, carefree and devoted to pleasure — eventually joining Earth's Avengers under the name Starfox, a codename the Wasp gave him because 'Eros' was a public-relations incident waiting to happen.

Starfox's signature power is the family argument in miniature: he can psionically stimulate the pleasure centers of other people's brains, calming them and making them open to suggestion. It works on gods, monsters and mobs. The one mind it has never worked on is his brother's — Thanos is immune to the only weapon in the family designed to make him happy.

And yet the strangest clause in their relationship is a standing appointment. Once every Eternal year — roughly a thousand Earth years — the brothers observe a formal truce: they meet at a neutral place, exchange gifts, and part without violence. The conqueror who has tried to erase half of creation keeps a recurring calendar date with the brother whose entire philosophy he despises, and by all accounts both of them honor it.

Why It's Obscure

Death and desire, raised in the same house on Titan — four panels on the family arrangement nobody puts in the movies.

1973
One issue, two brothers — Iron Man #55 introduced Thanos and Eros together; Starlin built them as Freud's two drives wearing capes: Thanatos and Eros.
Avengers
The brother in the roster — Eros joined the Avengers in the early 1980s and was rebranded Starfox by the Wasp, serving alongside the heroes his brother kept trying to kill.
Immunity
The power that fails at home — Starfox can pacify almost any mind in the universe with pleasure; Thanos, the one person he would most want to reach, is completely unaffected.
1,000 yrs
The truce clause — every Eternal year the brothers bury the hatchet at a neutral site and exchange gifts — a custom older than most civilizations either of them has destroyed.
