THANOS

Today's Fact

He has seized ultimate power more than once — and, as his oldest enemy diagnosed, some part of him always leaves the door open behind it.

THANOS SUBCONSCIOUSLY ARRANGES HIS OWN DEFEATS — DEEP DOWN, HE BELIEVES HE IS UNWORTHY OF ULTIMATE POWER!
The Featured Fact

The pattern is older than the Gauntlet. With a Cosmic Cube in hand, the godlike Thanos chose to toy with Captain Marvel instead of finishing him — and lost the Cube for it. Chasing the Soul Gems, he needlessly enraged Adam Warlock by destroying Pip the Troll's mind, planting the very warning that undid the scheme. Victory after victory, the Mad Titan kept supplying his enemies with the means of his defeat.

The diagnosis was finally spoken aloud after The Infinity Gauntlet (1991). Thanos had become Eternity, the supreme being of the universe — and still lost the Gauntlet to Nebula in the confusion. Studying the wreckage, Adam Warlock delivered the verdict that reframed every Thanos story before it: on some level the Titan does not believe he deserves supreme power, and so his subconscious quietly engineers its loss.

It is the most dangerous weakness in the universe precisely because Thanos cannot fight it. Armies, gems and gods he can plan for; the saboteur rides inside the planner. Warlock — who knows him, in his own words, better than Thanos knows himself — treated the flaw as a law of nature, and Thanos's career since has kept filing evidence for the prosecution.

Why It's Obscure

Every conqueror fears the hero at the gate. Thanos's recurring saboteur has always worn his own face.

Cube era
Exhibit one — holding godhood via a Cosmic Cube, Thanos toys with Captain Marvel rather than ending him, and the Cube is shattered for his vanity.
Gem era
Exhibit two — mid-scheme for the Soul Gems, he destroys Pip's mind within Warlock's reach, ensuring his enemy learns the plan.
1991
The Gauntlet — even enthroned as Eternity itself, Thanos loses the Gauntlet to Nebula — the stumble Warlock's diagnosis was built to explain.
The verdict
Unworthy, by his own measure — Warlock's reading: Thanos allows himself to be defeated because, deep down, he does not consider himself worthy of the power he wins.
