Everybody pictures Thanos beaten by a snapped finger or a beheading. His first death was quieter and much stranger: in Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2 (1977), by Jim Starlin, the Titan stands triumphant over the captured Avengers aboard his space ark — until Spider-Man, steered by his spider-sense, frees the Soul Gem, and the soul of the already-dead Adam Warlock blazes out of it and touches him.
One panel later the conquest is over. The comic's own narration spells it out beside the Thing and Thor: where Thanos had stood, proud and ruthless, there now stands the massive Titan transformed into solid granite — a grey, cracked statue with its arms still raised mid-threat, its soul trapped inside the petrified shell of itself.
Granite proved to be a long sentence. Thanos stayed out of the Marvel Universe as that statue for well over a decade of publication, until Death herself resurrected him in the run-up to the Infinity Gauntlet saga — which makes the grudge documented decades later in Silver Surfer: Rebirth #2 entirely understandable: Warlock is the one person Thanos flatly refuses to trust, because Warlock handed him his first true death.
Why It's Obscure
The snap gets the posters. The statue gets the history books — Thanos spent years as garden ornament for the cosmos.
