The Featured Fact

The man who had just snapped away half of all life was quietly rehired as a gem-keeper. When the Living Tribunal ruled that the Infinity Gems could never again be wielded together, Adam Warlock divided them among custodians in Warlock and the Infinity Watch #1 (1992): the Soul Gem for himself, Time for Gamora, Space for Pip the Troll, Power for Drax, Mind for Moondragon — and, announced to absolutely nobody, the Reality Gem for Thanos.

The reasoning was cold and, in its way, flattering. The Reality Gem is the most treacherous of the six when used alone, unbalanced by the others — and nobody alive understood that danger better than the Titan who had worn all six. Thanos honoured the brief in the least Thanos-like way imaginable: he never used the gem at all, keeping it in a display case in his hideaway like a trophy he had decided not to touch.

The secret later saved the universe. During the Infinity War, Warlock's evil aspect the Magus assembled a Gauntlet he believed complete — but the Reality Gem in it was a fake, a substitution only Warlock and Thanos knew about, because the real one had been sitting in the Mad Titan's cabinet the whole time. Reality itself, the thing the Magus lacked, became the hole in his godhood that brought him down.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone knows the snap. Almost nobody knows about the quiet desk job the snapper was given afterwards.

THE WATCH

Five public guardians, one secret. The Infinity Watch was presented as five gem-holders; the sixth appointment stayed off the books entirely, which also kept the gems physically separated. Compartmentalisation, Titan-sized.

THE CASE

Omnipotence, shelved. Offered the power to rewrite reality, Thanos filed it under glass in his hideaway and left it there — the Goddess once came within arm's length of it and still left empty-handed. Restraint was never his brand, which is the point.

THE FAKE

A decoy gem beat a god. Because the genuine article never left that case, the Magus's completed Gauntlet was quietly incomplete — and Eternity and Infinity could act against him. The universe was saved by inventory management.
