Today's Fact
Verified against five independent sources. Issue cited below — including the clone caveat, stated honestly.
Squirrel Girl beat Thanos. Not in a dream, not in a What If?, and not with an Infinity Gauntlet of her own — in GLX-Mas Special #1 (published December 2005), the Great Lakes Avengers holiday special. Doreen Green, out on a holiday errand for the team, had already taken down M.O.D.O.K. in the same issue when Thanos turned up with the Pyramatrix, a device he had charged with the life force of everyone on Earth, declaring: "The universe shall be mine for the taking!" Squirrel Girl's reply: "Oh yeah? Not if I can help it!"
And then — the most important part of the joke — we never see the fight at all. The story, drawn by Georges Jeanty and Drew Geraci, cuts straight past it to the aftermath: Squirrel Girl dusting off her hands beside a flattened, face-down Thanos, with her squirrel sidekick Tippy-Toe looking on. Uatu the Watcher descends to deliver the verdict in person: "Congratulations, Squirrel Girl. By defeating Thanos, you have saved the entire multiverse." Because the whole gag is that nobody will believe it, the comic makes the most reliable witness in Marvel say it out loud.
Uatu goes further still, because writer Dan Slott knew exactly which excuse readers would reach for. "With my cosmic senses I can confirm that that is, in fact, the one, true Thanos, and not a robot, clone, or simulacrum." That line is the whole point: Thanos has a long history of embarrassing defeats being explained away as clones — Jim Starlin himself introduced Thanos clones for exactly that purpose — so Slott had the Watcher close off every escape hatch in advance. As originally published, this was the real Thanos, beaten by Squirrel Girl, off-panel, at Christmas.
Now the honest caveat. A year later, in She-Hulk #12–13 (2006), Slott himself undercut his own joke: the Thanos testifying at Starfox's trial turned out to be a clone so perfect it would fool anyone — including a cosmic being like the Watcher. That revelation does not specifically retcon the GLX-Mas story, and no later comic has explicitly said the Thanos Squirrel Girl beat was a clone. But it does mean the Watcher's guarantee can no longer be treated as airtight. The fair way to state it: the story presents it as the real Thanos, the Watcher confirms it on-panel, and a later Slott story gives skeptics a loophole that has never actually been used to erase it.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody "knows" Thanos is one of Marvel's most unstoppable villains — the guy who needed the entire Avengers, a time-heist, and a snapped Gauntlet to stop. The obscure part isn't just that Squirrel Girl beat him; it's that the comic refused to show how, had the Watcher certify it, and then left the whole thing standing in canon, clone-shaped asterisk and all.
