Today's Fact
The perfect copycat runs on borrowed moves — and pays for every one of them with his own past.
Tony Masters was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent born with photographic reflexes: watch any movement once and his body could reproduce it perfectly. On a mission he injected himself with the last sample of an experimental serum — a corrupted Nazi variant of the Super-Soldier formula, a mnemonic primer built to supercharge the mind's ability to absorb knowledge. It worked. His reflexes became limitless. But the primer came with a ledger: every implicit memory he gained — every skill, every fighting style — began overwriting his explicit, personal memories.
The losses swallowed his whole former life: his years with S.H.I.E.L.D., his own history — and his marriage. His wife, fellow agent Mercedes Merced, watched her husband forget her, and built him a lifeline instead of leaving. Posing as the voice of 'the Org' — the mysterious 'Hub' who handed him his jobs — Mercedes became Taskmaster's handler, banker, and surrogate memory, steering his mercenary career from the shadows and quietly feeding intelligence back to S.H.I.E.L.D., reintroducing herself to a man who could never hold onto her.
And it never sticks. In Taskmaster Vol. 2 (2010), Masters fought his way back to the truth — the serum, the mission, Mercedes — remembering everything at last. Then, to save her life, he had to fight at his absolute limit, copying everything he had against the man hunting them, and the memories burned away again mid-rescue. Mercedes has suggested it was far from the first time: he has remembered her, and lost her, dozens of times. The greatest student in the Marvel Universe cannot retain the one lesson that matters.
