Today's Fact

The keepsake at her throat is older than her bloodline's memory of it, and considerably more dangerous.

STORM'S RED RUBY IS A DOOMSDAY KEY — ONE OF SIX GEMS THAT ONCE SANK ATLANTIS!
The Featured Fact

The round red stone Storm wears fastened at her throat in her classic costume looks like jewellery. It is a family heirloom with an apocalypse in its past: one of six ancient gemstones known in modern times as the Madripoor Set, a set temple legend credits with terrible power — and blames for the Fall of Atlantis the last time all six were gathered together.

The ruby passed from mother to daughter in Ororo's line for countless generations, possibly beginning with Ayesha of Balobedu, an ancestor alive before Atlantis fell. Ororo's mother N'Daré told her the stone's family history but never its origin, and after the Cairo plane crash killed her parents, six-year-old Ororo took the ruby from her mother's body and kept it safe through six years of begging and thieving on the streets — her only tangible piece of her mother.

Its secret surfaced when Khan, a conqueror from another dimension, invaded Earth during the X-Treme X-Men run (2002) and sent his warrior Shaitan to assemble the full Madripoor Set. Khan's forces stole Storm's ruby with the rest, activated the set, and tore open a portal the size of the entire island of Madripoor. The X-Men beat the invasion back and Storm recovered her heirloom — a souvenir she later, remarkably, gave away to a doctor as payment and donation for mutant medical care.

Why It's Obscure

Six gems, one drowned continent, and a thief who carried the evidence for years without knowing — the panels hold the provenance.

The Madripoor Set
Six stones, one warning — temple records on Madripoor describe the full set's power in the bleakest possible terms: assembled once before, with Atlantis as the casualty list.
Mother to daughter
The chain of custody — the ruby moved down Ororo's maternal line untouched for generations, each holder told it was precious and none, apparently, told exactly why.
Age six
What she carried out of the rubble — Ororo escaped her family's destroyed Cairo home with the clothes she wore and this stone, then guarded it through her entire childhood as a street thief.
Khan
The collector from another dimension — Khan's invasion was a treasure hunt with an army attached: gather all six gems, open the gate, and let his forces pour through onto Earth.

Bullpen Bulletins

  1. Storm's Ruby — Marvel Database Documents the ruby as one of the six Madripoor Set gems blamed for the Fall of Atlantis, its mother-to-daughter inheritance, Khan stealing it to open a Madripoor-sized portal, and Ororo later giving it to Doctor Daye.
  2. Ororo Munroe (Earth-616) — Marvel Database Confirms the ancient ruby passed in the family for countless generations and that six-year-old Ororo escaped the Cairo rubble with nothing but her clothes and her mother's ancestral ruby.
