Ororo Munroe is famous for refusing violence, which is precisely why Uncanny X-Men #170 (June 1983), by Chris Claremont and Paul Smith, lands so hard. Deep beneath New York, the Morlock leader Callisto had kidnapped Angel to make him her mate, and her follower Plague had left both Storm and Kitty Pryde deathly ill. Callisto refused to let the X-Men carry Kitty to surface doctors, and Morlock law offered exactly one appeal: challenge the leader to a duel.
Nightcrawler moved to issue the challenge and Storm overruled him, claiming the fight as her own — feverish, weakened, and bound moments earlier. The duel was fought with knives and no powers, Callisto’s home ground in every sense. Storm caught the blade Callisto tossed her clean out of the air, used her cape to entangle her opponent, and stabbed Callisto through the heart.
By Morlock law the crown passed on the spot. Storm freed Angel, decreed that the Morlocks would no longer kidnap or terrorise surface dwellers, and offered them a home above ground, which they declined. Callisto survived only because the Morlocks’ Healer reached her in time — a mercy Storm could not have counted on when she struck, and a ruthlessness her teammates noted with real unease.
Why It's Obscure
A queen of the surface weather went underground, left her lightning behind, and came back ruling the tunnels.
