Today's Fact
Peter Quill’s signature weapon is an inheritance, a murder-scene survivor and a liar, all in one holster.
The Element Gun did not begin life as Star-Lord merchandise. It belonged to J’son of Spartax, who left it behind on Earth after crash-landing and being nursed back to health by Meredith Quill. The weapon is encoded to the Spartax royal family’s DNA, which means almost nobody in the galaxy can fire it except the emperor who abandoned it — and the son he never met.
Ten-year-old Peter Quill found the gun on the worst night of his life. Badoon soldiers came to his home to kill the Spartax heir before he could grow up, murdered his mother, and destroyed the house around him; the Element Gun was the only thing that survived the destruction, and a grieving child defended himself with his birthright without knowing what it was.
The gun even edited his memories: it fed Peter false recollections of a Master of the Sun appointing him Star-Lord, a legend he believed for years. He later rebuilt the weapon repeatedly and built a second one, and in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 6 #9 (2020) he channelled stolen Olympian god-power through it — until the overloaded gun eventually dissolved in his hands during the Grootfall conflict.
Why It's Obscure
One pistol carries Peter’s father, his mother’s death and a fake mentor — the gun is his whole origin in metal.
