Today's Fact
One Guardian actually scored the kill on Thanos. The universe he did it in refused to honour the result.
Trapped inside the Cancerverse at the end of The Thanos Imperative (2010), Peter Quill did the thing years of Avengers team-ups never managed: he turned a Cosmic Cube on Thanos at point-blank range and burned the Mad Titan down to a skeleton.
The victory lasted about one page. Thanos simply re-formed behind him and drove a fist clean through Peter's chest, then explained the trap's cruel house rule — as outsiders, none of them were made of Cancerverse matter, so none of them could actually die there.
The full account stayed secret for years of real publication time. It was finally told in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 #18–20 (2014), after Gamora knocked Peter out, tied him to a chair, and demanded the truth about how he, Drax and Thanos walked out while Nova — Richard Rider — did not.
Why It's Obscure
A win, a chest wound, and a secret kept for years — the Cancerverse chapter is the darkest entry in Peter Quill's service record.
