STAR-LORD GOT THE JOB BY STEALING A SPACESHIP AND SHOOTING HIS WAY PAST NASA!
The Featured Fact

The Star-Lord of the films charms his way out of trouble. The original Star-Lord of Marvel Preview #4 (January 1976), by Steve Englehart and Steve Gan, forced his way in. Peter Quill, a trainee astronaut whose mother had been killed by aliens, was working aboard a space station when an entity called the Master of the Sun announced that one of the crew would be chosen to become Star-Lord, an interplanetary policeman.

Quill volunteered instantly — and was passed over for a colleague, Harrelson, a man Quill had once treated badly. Ordered back to Earth in disgrace after his furious reaction, Quill instead seized a gun, stole a scoutship, wounded Harrelson and several other astronauts on his way out, and flew himself into the appointment NASA had denied him.

The astonishing part is what happened next: the Master of the Sun knew exactly how Quill had arrived, and made him Star-Lord anyway. Quill received the mantle, a uniform, the Element Gun — a weapon that fires earth, air, fire and water — and the sentient vessel Ship. First, the Master staged an illusion in which Quill destroyed the aliens who had murdered his mother, so that vengeance, experienced and spent, would not steer the hero he was meant to become.

Why It's Obscure

Before the outlaw legend, there was an astronaut so determined to leave Earth that NASA’s refusal barely slowed him down.

Marvel Preview #4 — “Starlord: First House — Earth!” introduces Peter Quill, the Master of the Sun and the Element Gun in a black-and-white magazine-sized debut.
THE SNUB
Second choice, by committee — the station crew picks Harrelson for the honour, and Houston orders the furious Quill home to be discharged.
THE THEFT
One scoutship, several casualties — Quill wounds his rival and other astronauts, steals the ship and intercepts the ceremony that was supposed to crown someone else.
THE TWIST
Chosen anyway — the Master sees the cheating clearly, grants the mantle regardless, and burns the revenge out of Quill with a staged, illusory kill.
