Today's Fact

Earth's Mightiest Heroes set a teenager one entrance exam: bring us the strongest fugitive on Earth.

SPIDER-MAN CAUGHT THE HULK FOR AN AVENGERS AUDITION — THEN LET HIM GO AND LIED ABOUT IT!
The Featured Fact

Long before Peter Parker ever held an Avengers card, the team debated whether the masked menace of the Daily Bugle belonged in their ranks. In The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3 (1966), by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr., they even called in Daredevil as a character witness before Thor carried the offer to Spider-Man himself — membership, his for the taking, after a single test.

The test was Iron Man's idea, and it was not a written exam: find the Hulk, beat him, and deliver him to Avengers headquarters. Peter tracked the former Avenger to a gamma research station, survived the brawl, and watched a smashed gamma shield bathe the Hulk in radiation — shrinking him, mid-fight, back into a frightened Bruce Banner, who told the masked stranger exactly who he was and what the change cost him.

When the Hulk returned, Spider-Man still finished the job, webbing the giant up tight enough to haul home. Then he untied his prize instead. Convinced Banner needed help rather than a cell, Peter walked back into Avengers headquarters empty-handed and told Earth's Mightiest Heroes he had never found the Hulk at all — throwing away his one shot at the team to keep a stranger's secret.

Why It's Obscure

A job interview where the correct answer was failing on purpose — four panels on the audition Peter sabotaged himself.

Daredevil
The reference check — before approaching their candidate, the Avengers interviewed the Man Without Fear, who had fought beside Spider-Man and vouched for him warmly.
24 hours
The thinking time — Thor delivered the invitation and gave a high-school student a full day to decide whether he wanted to join the most powerful team on the planet.
The gamma station
Where the exam collapsed — the fight wrecked a radiation shield, and the spill briefly restored Bruce Banner, turning a capture mission into a confidence Peter refused to betray.
Decades later
The delayed yes — Spider-Man stayed a solo act for years afterward and only became a regular Avenger in the modern era, long after the boy who failed the test had grown up.
