Today's Fact
Jennifer Walters had barely opened her own practice when the most radioactive client in the Marvel Universe walked in — because every other lawyer in New York had already said no.
Kristoff Vernard, adopted son and designated heir of Doctor Doom, wanted out. Doom did not intend Kristoff to rule Latveria one day so much as to be ruled through, a living continuation of his father's reign, and Kristoff wanted political asylum in the United States instead. He told Jennifer Walters plainly why her brand-new Brooklyn practice got the case: she was the fifteenth lawyer he had approached. Fourteen others had weighed a dictator's grudge and declined.
The filing became a chase. Kristoff's own chauffeur was a Doombot in disguise, tasked with dragging him onto a jet home; She-Hulk tore it apart, Hellcat ran decoy, and Jennifer got her client in front of a judge in time to argue that being forced to reign as another man's puppet was a prison sentence by another name. The court agreed. Asylum was granted — at which point Doctor Doom smashed through the courtroom ceiling, announced he would kill She-Hulk, and kidnapped his son anyway.
So Jennifer did what the fourteen sensible lawyers would not: she flew to Latveria, fought through an army of Doombots and a suit of Doom's armor, and then won the case the only way it could be won — by making Doom listen to Kristoff himself. Faced with his heir saying he wanted his own life, Doom let them both leave. Jennifer's fee, to her disgust, was payable only in Latverian francs.
Why It's Obscure
Most asylum cases are won on paperwork; this one needed a decoy Hellcat, a destroyed chauffeur, and an argument delivered inside the defendant's own castle.
