Today's Fact
Jennifer Walters built a career on control — courtroom control, gamma control. One manipulated morning in 2004 took both away in front of her oldest friends.
It began with two impossible arrivals at a ruined address. In Avengers Vol. 1 #500 (2004), by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch, the long-dead Jack of Hearts walked up to Avengers Mansion and detonated, killing Scott Lang and flattening half the building. Minutes later the Vision crashed a Quinjet through what was left of it, apologised to his teammates in a voice that was not quite his, and vomited five metal orbs onto the lawn — each of which unfolded into an Ultron. The Avengers destroyed the drones. Their teammate did the rest of the damage.
As the fight ended, She-Hulk came apart. Grief and fury spiralled into a berserk, near-mindless rage unlike anything her friends had seen from her — Jen seized the Vision’s broken body and ripped him in half, swatted the Wasp out of the air, and hoisted an armoured vehicle over the fallen Captain America, one throw away from killing him. It took Iron Man’s arrival and a single full-force punch in Avengers Vol. 1 #501 (2004) to put her down, with Captain Britain and the Wasp hospitalised and Jen herself waking in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.
The rage was never really hers. The whole day had been stage-managed by the Scarlet Witch, her mind broken by the recovered memory of her lost children and her reality-warping power turned against the team — Jen’s meltdown was one instrument among many, alongside a drunken Tony Stark disgracing himself at the United Nations and a Kree invasion conjured from nothing. Exoneration did not erase the footage in her head: the most disciplined Avenger of her generation had been made to murder a friend with her bare hands, and Vision spent the aftermath in pieces, in a storage crate.
Why It's Obscure
The cruelest part of the Vision’s destruction is whose hands were chosen to do it — his teammate, his counsel, and his friend.
