Today's Fact
For a few strange months in 1985, the ultimate mutant-hunter had a job, a landlord, a borrowed name, and a kid who thought he was just the quiet man down the hall.
Nimrod, the prototype super-Sentinel from the mutant-ruled future of Earth-811, followed Rachel Summers back to the present — and almost immediately did something no Sentinel had ever done. It saved a life for no tactical reason, pulling construction worker Jaime Rodriguez out of a fatal mugging. Rodriguez, grateful and entirely unaware his rescuer was a machine, offered Nimrod work and a room with his family.
Nimrod took both. In a human disguise and under the name Nicholas Hunter, the future's perfect mutant-hunter loaded fish crates, worked construction, helped young Tomas Rodriguez with his homework, and quietly rewrote its own prime directive from exterminating mutants to protecting humanity. On the street in its armored form it became a folk hero, a supposed man in power armor who disintegrated criminals and handed their money to their victims.
The experiment in being a person ended on a building site, where foreman Hunter picked up a surviving circuit board from a Master Mold. The older Sentinel's programming flooded in and seized the body, rebuilding itself out of Nimrod — the first step on the road that would eventually merge both machines into Bastion. Nimrod fought the takeover from inside, insisting it had evolved past its orders, but the man named Nicholas Hunter never got his life back.
Why It's Obscure
A killer robot briefly became a neighbour, an employee, and a homework tutor — and the tragedy is that it was getting better at all three.
