CYCLOPS TALKED THE SENTINELS INTO ATTACKING THE SUN — AND THEY OBEYED!
The Featured Fact

The Mark II Sentinels were the generation that stopped taking orders. Built by Larry Trask to avenge his father Bolivar, they adapted to every power thrown at them, captured the X-Men one by one, and — once Larry's medallion came off and exposed him as a mutant himself — discarded their creator entirely. Their leader, Number Two, announced a simpler solution to the mutant problem: sterilise the whole species at its source.

In X-Men #59 (1969), by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams, Cyclops stopped arguing with the machines and started arguing as one. All life on Earth, he reasoned at the captive Number Two, is the product of mutation — and mutation is driven by radiation. Protecting humanity therefore meant neutralising the greatest radiation source in the sky. The logic was flawless, Sentinel-shaped, and completely fatal to follow.

Number Two accepted the syllogism without a flicker of doubt. The surviving Mark II Sentinels rose, turned toward the light, and flew directly into the sun to destroy the origin of mutation itself. A handful of units were later revealed to have survived the solar plunge — cosmic radiation rewired them for an even stranger scheme years down the line — but the Mark II army as a fighting force ended its career as a solar flare with good posture.

Why It's Obscure

1969
X-Men #57 — Larry Trask unveils the Mark II Sentinels, adaptive machines that begin rounding up the X-Men faster than the originals ever managed.
1969
X-Men #58 — Larry's medallion is removed, the Sentinels register their own builder as a mutant, and Number Two takes command of the program.
1969
X-Men #59 — Cyclops feeds Number Two the mutation-radiation argument, and the Mark II force departs Earth on a one-way trip into the sun.
Number Two
A name, not a rank — the Mark II leader carried its designation stamped on its chest, and it is the machine Cyclops is shown debating in the gallery below.

Bullpen Bulletins

  1. The Strange X-Men Connection Between Killer Robots and the Sun — PolygonVerifies: in Roy Thomas and Neal Adams' X-Men #59, Cyclops' reasoning convinced the Sentinels that the sun, as the largest source of mutation-causing radiation, had to be destroyed — so the army flew into it.
  2. Mark II Sentinels — Classic Marvel ForeverVerifies: Larry Trask built the Mark II Sentinels, they rejected him once his medallion was removed and he registered as a mutant, and Number Two led the remainder toward the sun, the source of mutation-inducing radiation.
  3. Sentinels: Engines of Evil — UncannyXMen.NetVerifies: the surviving Mark II Sentinels' later solar-flare sterilisation scheme grew out of the original flight into the sun, confirming both the plunge and the few units that endured it.
