Today's Fact
Verified against multiple independent sources. Issues cited below.
The deadliest Sentinels ever fielded were not built in a gleaming Trask laboratory. They were grown in secret by a forgotten wild Master Mold hidden in the jungles of Ecuador, a factory that improvised new mutant-hunters out of whatever technology and raw material lay within reach. No army guarded the project, no government signed off on it, and for years nobody who could have stopped it even knew it existed.
Cassandra Nova found it. Because the Mold's Sentinels were keyed to obey the Trask bloodline, she brought along Bolivar Trask's cousin, Donald Trask III, used his voice to wake the system, copied his genetic code into herself, and then murdered him. In New X-Men #114–#115 (2001), by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, she aimed the finished products at the largest concentration of mutant signatures on Earth.
That target was Genosha, the island nation Magneto had rebuilt into a mutant homeland of some sixteen and a half million people. The giant Wild Sentinels made landfall and reduced that population to fewer than a thousand survivors in a matter of hours. Emma Frost lived only because the shock triggered a secondary mutation, turning her body to organic diamond mid-collapse. Survivors later built a monument to Magneto out of the wreckage of the very machine that had slaughtered his country (New X-Men #132).
