Today's Fact

The giant robots were easy to spot. The Prime Sentinels were not robots at all. Introduced in X-Men vol. 2 #64 (April 1997) by Scott Lobdell & Carlos Pacheco, they were ordinary, often disabled humans fitted with nanotechnology at clinics like the Prospero Clinic — told they were receiving advanced prosthetic limbs — who went home as sleeper agents for Bastion's Operation: Zero Tolerance.
They lived normal lives, unaware of what was inside them, until a mutant came near or Bastion sent the signal. Then the nanotech restructured their bodies on the spot into armoured cyborgs with flight, energy weapons, mutant-detection sensors, and the ability to dampen mutant powers — and to inject other humans and convert them, too.
With them, Bastion seized the X-Mansion and Xavier's files, captured Professor X and several X-Men, and planted a bomb in Cyclops' chest (X-Men vol. 2 #65–#68). The program only fell in #69, when Senator Robert Kelly withdrew political support and S.H.I.E.L.D. shut it down. Its most famous product, Karima Shapandar, the Omega Sentinel, later joined the X-Men herself — a Sentinel on the roster, built out of a policewoman.
Why It's Obscure
Trask built robots you could see coming. Bastion built Sentinels who rode the bus home next to you.
