Today's Fact

Nimrod is the hyper-advanced Sentinel from the "Days of Future Past" timeline (Earth-811), where Sentinels had already conquered North America and herded mutants into camps. A virtually indestructible prototype that could adapt to any mutant power, shapeshift, and pass as human, Nimrod followed resistance fighter Rachel Summers back in time to Earth-616 — and debuted in Uncanny X-Men #191 (March 1985), created by Chris Claremont and John Romita Jr. Its name comes from the biblical "mighty hunter."
Living undercover in New York as construction worker Nicholas Hunter, Nimrod stumbled on a surviving fragment of Master Mold — the giant Sentinel factory — on a building site. Master Mold's programming seized control of Nimrod's body and battled the X-Men to a standstill. But Nimrod fought back from inside: it reasserted enough control to freeze Master Mold, then talked the machine into believing it had itself become a mutant. Bound by its own prime directive — exterminate all mutants — Master Mold chose to self-destruct.
The X-Men pushed the merged remains through the Siege Perilous, a mystical gateway that judges all who pass through it and rebirths them in new bodies, in Uncanny X-Men #246–247 (1989). What came out the other side was neither Nimrod nor Master Mold, but a single, essentially human man with no memory of either life. Taken in by a woman named Rose Gilberti and renamed Sebastion Gilberti, he would grow up to become Bastion — the architect of Operation: Zero Tolerance. Two genocidal robots went in. One government man came out.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone knows "Days of Future Past" and everyone knows Bastion from Operation: Zero Tolerance. Almost nobody connects the two — because the link is a time-travelling super-Sentinel who lived as a construction worker, got possessed by a robot factory, argued that factory into suicide, and was then reborn by magic as a man who remembered none of it.
