Today's Fact
One ceremony, two brides, and an officiant who was also the villain trying to crash it, separated only by a few centuries of his own life.
When Wanda Maximoff married the Vision in Giant-Size Avengers Vol. 1 #4 (1975), the man performing the ceremony was Immortus, master of Limbo. Immortus is not a separate time traveller from the Avengers' enemy Kang the Conqueror — he is Kang, at a later point in the same life, which means the groom's party was married by the future self of the villain who attacked the wedding.
Wanda did not even get the ceremony to herself. Hers was half of a double wedding: beside her, Mantis, the Celestial Madonna, married the eldest Cotati — an alien plant intelligence — whose spirit had taken up residence in the reanimated body of the dead Avenger called the Swordsman. One bride wed a synthezoid raised from the original Human Torch; the other wed vegetation wearing her late teammate.
The road to the altar ran through the Celestial Madonna saga in Avengers Vol. 1 #129–135, where Kang hunted for the woman prophesied to bear the Celestial Messiah and the Swordsman died stopping him. By the time Immortus pronounced the couples married, the guest list, the officiant and the second groom between them covered a time war, a resurrection and a species that photosynthesises.
Why It's Obscure
Plenty of heroes marry in costume. Almost none do it as the warm-up act for a bride exchanging vows with alien flora.
