Today's Fact

The Scarlet Witch's birth attendant was a Guernsey cow the High Evolutionary had taught to walk, talk, and catch babies.

WANDA WAS DELIVERED BY A COW — BOVA, THE EVOLVED MIDWIFE OF WUNDAGORE!
The Featured Fact

When a pregnant Magda fled her husband and staggered up Mount Wundagore in Transia, the midwife waiting in the High Evolutionary's citadel was not a doctor. She was Bova Ayrshire, an ordinary Guernsey cow uplifted by the High Evolutionary into one of his New Men — a humanoid, speaking nursemaid built to care for his creations. As retold in Avengers Vol. 1 #185–187 (1979), it was Bova who delivered Magda's twins, Wanda and Pietro.

Bova's hardest shift came right after. She next served as midwife to the Golden Age heroine Miss America, whose baby was stillborn and who died in the birthing — so Bova carried Magda's abandoned twins down and offered them to the widowed Whizzer as his own children. Overcome with grief, he fled the mountain, and the twins stayed in Bova's arms a while longer.

Eventually the High Evolutionary placed Wanda and Pietro with the Romani couple Django and Marya Maximoff, and Bova went on to help raise another future hero, the young Jessica Drew. Years later it was Bova herself who finally told the adult Avengers the whole tangled story — making the cow of Wundagore the living witness to the Scarlet Witch's first day on Earth.

Why It's Obscure

Wanda's origin involves an elder god, a magnetic terrorist and a mountain of knights — but the person actually present at her birth was livestock.

Giant-Size Avengers #1
First hoofbeats, 1974 — Bova debuted in Giant-Size Avengers #1, the same story that planted the Whizzer's claim to be the twins' father.
A nanny by design
Built for the job — The High Evolutionary made Bova specifically as nursemaid to his New Men, including the animal Knights of Wundagore — midwifery was her purpose.
Avengers #185–187
The full confession — Wanda's search for her birth story brings the Avengers to Bova's cottage, and her account anchors the twins' origin for decades of continuity.
Bova Milk
The screen's nod — WandaVision's second episode hides a Bova Milk carton in its animated credits — the cow made it to television as an Easter egg.
