Today's Fact
Checked against independent sources — the issues are cited below.
Wanda Maximoff's twin sons, Billy and Tommy, were the miracle of her marriage to the Vision — until Agatha Harkness arrived at the West Coast compound with a terrible observation: the children vanished whenever Wanda stopped thinking about them. In Avengers West Coast Vol. 1 #51 (1989), the reason surfaces — Wanda had not created life from nothing. Her power had unknowingly gathered two wandering fragments of a shattered soul.
The soul belonged to Mephisto. His essence had been broken and scattered in an earlier defeat, and the two shards Wanda's magic had shaped into sons were his property. The demon Master Pandemonium seized the twins first, incorporating their souls into his own body, and in Avengers West Coast Vol. 1 #52 (1989) Mephisto himself appeared to reclaim what was his.
The Avengers won the fight and drove Mephisto off — and it changed nothing. With the shards' true nature exposed, the twins could not remain, and Agatha's only way to sever Mephisto's link through Wanda was to erase every memory of her sons from Wanda's mind. The victory was so hollow that Wanda later fell into a catatonic collapse, and the buried memory's eventual return would detonate over the Avengers years later.
Why It's Obscure
Billy and Tommy only existed while their mother thought of them — because the souls animating them were never hers to give.
