After stepping away from the Avengers, Wanda Maximoff noticed something nobody else could feel: witchcraft itself was sick. Spells misfired, old magic soured, and the damage spread along bloodlines of witches who had no idea their craft was rotting underneath them. In Scarlet Witch Vol. 2 #1 (2015), by James Robinson and Vanesa Del Rey, Wanda appointed herself the repair crew of an entire discipline of magic.
Her only travelling companion was dead. Agatha Harkness, murdered years earlier during Wanda's own breakdown, returned as a ghost — translucent, sardonic and entirely unbothered by being deceased — to advise her former student. Together they traced the sickness from a rage-demon in Greece to a possessed Man-Bull in Spain, and in Scarlet Witch #3 they stepped through a portal onto the Witches' Road, a plane that exists only for practitioners of magic.
The Road charged Wanda a toll no Avenger ever had: every spell she cast there aged her spirit, and the path still handed her the answer to a question she had stopped asking. Waiting on the Road was a young Natalya Maximoff — the previous Scarlet Witch, and Wanda's biological mother. By Scarlet Witch #14, Natalya's spirit sacrificed itself to save the goddess Witchcraft from Chaos, and that sacrifice pulled Agatha back into the land of the living.
