AN ELDER GOD CLAIMED WANDA IN HER CRADLE — HER CHAOS MAGIC WAS HIS DOORWAY BACK!
The Featured Fact

Wanda Maximoff was born on Mount Wundagore in Transia, a peak with a tenant: the elder god Chthon, imprisoned there in ages past and still reaching for a way back into the world. As the newborn twins lay in the care of the cow-woman Bova, Chthon touched the infant Wanda and marked her as a future vessel, suffusing her with a well of chaos magic no ordinary mutant gift could explain. The secret stayed buried until Avengers #185–#187 (1979), the “Nights of Wundagore” storyline.

That stolen blessing is the hidden engine of Wanda's whole publication history. Her mutant hexes only bent probability in small, spiteful ways at first, but the power kept outgrowing that description — because underneath it sat an elder god's endowment, waiting for its owner to collect. Chthon's plan was patient and simple: let the girl grow strong, then wear her back into the world he had been banished from.

The collection attempt came when the sorcerer Modred the Mystic, Chthon's servant, helped his master seize Wanda on Wundagore itself. The Avengers fought through the mountain's defenders, heard Bova's account of the twins' birth, and tore Wanda free before the possession could hold. The rescue won the day, but it could not unwrite the cradle: every reality-warping feat Wanda has managed since traces back, in part, to the night a god put his thumbprint on her soul.

Why It's Obscure

Most introductions stop at “mutant hex powers.” The god waiting inside the mountain rarely makes the summary.

1979
Avengers #185 — the Avengers travel toward Wundagore as the twins' birthplace secrets begin to surface, and Bova's role in their first days comes to light.
1979
Avengers #186 — Django Maximoff and Modred the Mystic move on the mountain, and the machinery of Chthon's return starts turning.
1979
Avengers #187 — Chthon claims Wanda as his vessel; the Avengers break the possession, but the elder god's mark on her remains part of her power forever after.
Wundagore
The mountain itself — Wundagore was already strange ground: the High Evolutionary's citadel stood there, and Chthon's prison lay beneath it, which is why so much Maximoff history keeps crawling back to one Transian peak.
