Today's Fact
Two years after fighting Spider-Man in a high school, William Baker joined a team built to be somebody else's nightmare.
In Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #36 (1965), the Wizard decided that if the Fantastic Four could be a team, their enemies could be one too. He sprang Sandman and the glue-gun crook Paste-Pot Pete and pointed them at the Baxter Building, but a mirror-image team needed a fourth — and the fourth he found was a wandering woman with living, prehensile hair who called herself Madame Medusa. Baker took his place in the very first Frightful Four, a deliberate evil answer to Marvel's first family.
The debut could hardly have landed harder. The Frightful Four crashed the public engagement celebrations of Reed Richards and Sue Storm and, in the ambush that followed, got the better of the Thing, the Invisible Girl and Mister Fantastic himself. For a Spider-Man villain whose first outing had ended inside a vacuum cleaner, standing victorious over three of the Fantastic Four was a considerable promotion — and the team kept coming back, returning again and again through Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's run on the title.
The recruit who completed the line-up was the real buried headline. Medusa was making her first appearance anywhere in that issue, and she had no idea who she was: later stories revealed she was Medusalith Amaquelin, an Inhuman driven amnesiac after a battle, and in time the queen of Attilan and wife of Black Bolt. Sandman's old gang, in other words, accidentally fielded royalty — the Frightful Four is where one of Marvel's great queens walked on stage as a hired thug with a stolen name.
Why It's Obscure
