SABRETOOTH WON HIS ADAMANTIUM SKELETON — THEN APOCALYPSE RIPPED IT OUT AND GAVE IT TO WOLVERINE!
The Featured Fact

For a brief, shining moment Victor Creed had everything Wolverine had and more: through unknown benefactors, Sabretooth underwent the adamantium bonding process and gained an unbreakable skeleton and metal-laced claws at exactly the time Logan was running around with bone claws after Magneto’s attack. Creed used the advantage immediately, ambushing Wolverine around his forced wedding to Viper in Madripoor, and only Kitty Pryde’s intervention kept the metal-clawed Creed from finishing a defenceless Logan.

Then Apocalypse came collecting. Hunting a new Horseman of Death, the ancient mutant captured both men and staged a simple audition in Wolverine Vol. 2 #145 (1999): Creed and Logan would fight, and the winner would be remade as Death. Sabretooth relished the prize. Wolverine fought for the opposite reason — he wanted the job precisely so Creed would never get it — and despite giving away the adamantium edge in speed, strength and durability, Logan won anyway.

The prize ceremony was the humiliation. Apocalypse decided his Horseman needed the full classic loadout, so he extracted the adamantium straight out of Sabretooth’s body and bonded it onto Wolverine’s skeleton as the source material for Logan’s restoration. Creed was left raging at the indignity, his one upgrade repossessed and worn by his worst enemy. Years later the revived Weapon X program bonded adamantium to Creed a second time — without asking him, naturally — but the first set will always be the one he lost in a job interview.

Why It's Obscure

He finally got the metal skeleton he always wanted — then lost a fight, and watched his enemy get it grafted on instead.

Bone era
Right metal, wrong decade — Creed’s bonding landed while Wolverine was still on bone claws after Fatal Attractions, handing Sabretooth the one clear hardware advantage the rivalry had ever seen.
Madripoor
The wedding crasher — Creed’s first outing with metal claws targeted Logan on the eve of his obligation wedding to Viper, and Shadowcat’s rescue is the only reason the groom survived it.
1999
An audition with one prize — Wolverine Vol. 2 #145: Apocalypse pits Creed against Logan for the mantle of Death, and Logan wins the fight while actively trying to keep Creed from winning the job.
Repossessed
Same metal, new owner — Apocalypse stripped the adamantium from the loser and used it to re-bond the winner’s skeleton, restoring Wolverine’s classic configuration out of Sabretooth’s own bones.
