SABRETOOTH WAS WOLVERINE'S TEAMMATE FIRST — ON A CIA BLACK-OPS SQUAD WITH EDITED MEMORIES!
The Featured Fact

Long before Victor Creed was the monster under Wolverine's bed, he was the man watching Logan's back on government orders. During the 1960s the CIA ran a covert mutant unit called Team X, and its roster read like a future enemies list: Creed, Logan, David North — the agent called Maverick — plus John Wraith, Mastodon and a woman the team believed was Silver Fox.

In service the agents were assets, and assets were managed. The programme's telepath, Aldo Ferro — remembered in the files as Psi-Borg and Vole — implanted false memories across the unit, burying genuine recollections so thoroughly that its operatives could be parked in civilian life as sleepers who no longer knew what they had been. The same programme dosed its people with age-suppression and healing treatments derived from Wolverine's own mutant physiology.

Insurance ran both ways. A contingency called the Shiva Scenario kept heavily armoured robots ready to hunt down and kill any Team X operative who ever went rogue. The arrangement held until the early 1970s, when Team X was disbanded and its survivors scattered with heads full of other people's pasts — which is why, when the truth finally surfaced in X-Men vol. 2 #5–#7 (1992), Creed and Logan had to piece their shared history together out of an old Omega Red mission neither of them could fully trust.

Why It's Obscure

Two of Marvel's most savage solo killers spent the sixties as workmates — and the personnel file was partly fiction.

The Squad
Black operations, mutant edition: Creed ran deniable missions beside Logan and Maverick years before any of them wore an X, answering to handlers who treated memory itself as classified material.
The Editing
Psi-Borg's implants did not just hide Team X from its enemies. They hid Team X from itself, which is why so many of Creed's and Logan's flashbacks contradict each other in print.
The Cleanup
Shiva was the exit clause with a serial number: armoured enforcers pre-built to execute the programme's own people the moment a sleeper woke up wrong.
