AXIS FLIPPED SABRETOOTH GOOD — AND HE STAYED THAT WAY FOR YEARS
The Featured Fact

During Avengers & X-Men: AXIS (2014), a spell meant to invert the Red Skull's morality backfired and inverted everyone on the island — including Sabretooth. The serial killer who had tormented Wolverine for decades suddenly felt remorse for everything he had done. And unlike most of the inverted heroes and villains, Creed did not flip back: shielded by Iron Man's technology during the reinversion, he stayed heroic, turned himself in to pay for his crimes, and set out to be a hero.

He did it in Logan's shadow — literally. With Wolverine dead, the reformed Sabretooth donned a variation of one of Wolverine's classic costumes and tried to fill the hole his old enemy left behind. He joined the Avengers Unity Division (the Unity Squad), fighting the High Evolutionary and Ultron alongside Rogue, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Vision, Sam Wilson's Captain America and Doctor Voodoo — teammates who knew exactly who he used to be and trusted him only on a very short leash.

The redemption lasted years, not issues. Creed later joined Magneto's team of X-Men (Uncanny X-Men vol. 4, 2016), where he fought to protect mutants during the M-Pox crisis — and even fell for teammate Monet St. Croix (M), promising her he would stay grounded and be something different rather than the monster he was. Writers have called it the longest stretch Sabretooth ever walked the heroes' side of the line — roughly 2014 until Weapon X #27 (2018) finally reverted him, a run of about four years.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone knows Sabretooth as Wolverine's bloodthirsty nemesis. Almost nobody knows a magic spell once made him a genuine hero — and that, unlike every other inverted villain, he kept at it for years, in Wolverine's own costume, on two different hero teams.

2014
Avengers & X-Men: AXIS #3 — Doctor Doom and Scarlet Witch cast an inversion spell to defeat the Red Skull (Red Onslaught). It overshoots and flips everyone on the island, Sabretooth included. He goes from predator to penitent in a single spell.
2014
AXIS #9 — the loophole that saved him — Creed helps Steve Rogers prepare the reinversion, knowing it should make him evil again. But standing near Iron Man, he is caught under Stark's reinversion shield — and stays good. His first heroic act: turning himself in to answer for his crimes.
2015
Uncanny Avengers vol. 2 #1 — The inverted Creed joins the Avengers Unity Division, chasing Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to Counter-Earth. Series writer Rick Remender promised a Sabretooth with all his old memories intact — but a newfound sense of duty, in a new costume, filling the Wolverine-sized hole.
2016
Uncanny X-Men vol. 4 #1 — Magneto recruits the reformed Creed for his X-Men during the M-Pox crisis, protecting mutants targeted by Someday Enterprises. There he grows close to Monet St. Croix (M) — the promise he made her becomes his anchor for staying good.
2018
Weapon X #27 — the end of the run — After roughly four years as a hero, Marvel reverts Creed to villainy. CBR later summed it up as a heroic, relatively less brutal figure "for several years" — the longest good stretch of Victor Creed's life, and one most readers still don't know happened.
