Today's Fact
Verified against four independent sources. Issue cited below.
Iron Fist #14 (August 1977), "White Snow — White Doom!" by Chris Claremont & John Byrne — Sabretooth's very first appearance. He debuts as a serial killer stalking Iron Fist through the Canadian Rockies, nine full years before Claremont folded him into the X-Men as a Marauder during the "Mutant Massacre" (1986). At his birth, Sabretooth had zero connection to Wolverine: no Weapon X, no annual birthday brawls, no archenemy status — he was Danny Rand's problem.
The original Sabretooth was a non-powered serial killer — the mutant healing factor and bestial powers were written in later. He fought Iron Fist once hidden behind a mask and gloves as "the Slasher", worked for a time with the Constrictor as a partner-in-crime, clashed repeatedly with Iron Fist and Power Man, and even surfaced in The Spectacular Spider-Man.
Claremont simply recycled his own villain: the "Mutant Massacre" made Sabretooth a Marauder, and the Wolverine link — first woven in the early 1980s — finally made him famous. Iron Fist #14 sat in dollar bins for years before becoming a key issue; graded copies now fetch thousands at auction. Even the name was different at birth: the cover banner reads "INTRODUCING! THE SAVAGERY OF SABRE-TOOTH!" — hyphenated. The fused "Sabretooth" stuck later.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone knows Sabretooth as Wolverine's mirror-image nemesis. Almost nobody knows he spent his first decade as a kung-fu comic's villain — a Bronze Age oddity Claremont rescued from the dollar bins and rebuilt into one of Marvel's defining monsters.
