Today's Fact
Rogue was dying under a lifetime of borrowed psyches; the cure turned out to be an infant.
By the finale of Messiah CompleX, Rogue was comatose and dying by inches. The villain Pandemic had infected her with Strain 88, a virus that supercharged her absorption until a bare touch killed outright, and on top of that her head held the residue of the eight billion minds of the Hecatomb. In X-Men Vol. 2 #207 (2008) she lay on Muir Island while the people who loved her ran out of medical options.
Her foster mother found a different kind of option. Mystique, following a prophecy in Destiny's diaries, had already murdered Mr. Sinister by forcing his face against Rogue's skin — then she gambled everything on the diaries' promise and pressed the newborn Hope Summers, the first mutant baby born since M-Day, directly to the comatose Rogue's lips.
The baby's touch did what no doctor could. Hope purged the Strain 88 virus out of Rogue's body and flushed away the accumulated memories and personalities of everyone Rogue had ever absorbed — decades of stolen minds, gone in one contact, with Rogue herself physically healed. She woke up whole, learned what Mystique had risked to do it, and disowned her on the spot.
Why It's Obscure
The most important touch of Rogue's life is one she slept through — and it was performed by a newborn.
