ROGUE COULDN'T CONTROL HER TOUCH BECAUSE HER OWN MIND HAD WALLED IT OFF!
The Featured Fact

For decades Rogue's absorption ran wild because of architecture, not power levels. In X-Men: Legacy vol. 1 #224 (2009), the sentient Danger Room intelligence called Danger worked out that when Rogue's gift first erupted — mid-kiss, traumatising, involuntary — her young mind had slammed up psychic partitions to cage what she had taken from Cody Robbins.

Every heavy absorption afterwards piled another wall on top: Carol Danvers added one, and Mystique added another. Those partitions froze Rogue's gift at its clumsy adolescent stage, so the mature, controllable version of her power simply never got the chance to grow up.

Professor X walked her mind in that same issue, tearing the empty partitions down one by one — most had already been scoured clean by baby Hope Summers' touch — and purging the last squatter, Mystique's echo. With the walls gone, Rogue's power could finally mature, and she tested it the way the story had been promising for years: she kissed Gambit, and nobody fell into a coma.

Why It's Obscure

Twenty-eight years of gloves and warnings, and the lock turned out to be inside her own head the whole time.

The Diagnosis
Danger reached the answer by arithmetic rather than telepathy: the pattern of Rogue's failures pointed to a mind protecting itself, not a power refusing orders.
The Payoff
Control did not arrive fully trained. Xavier freed the mechanism in #224; learning to steer a gift that had been stalled for a decade was work Rogue still had to do herself.
