ROGUE STOLE SUNFIRE'S FIRE — AND HIS VOICE CAME WITH IT!

The Featured Fact

Rogue's solo trip to Tokyo turned into a frame-up, a kidnapping, and a cell shared with Sunfire — Shiro Yoshida, Japan's solar-powered mutant hero. Lady Deathstrike had already taken his legs in battle, and as she closed in to finish everyone quietly, the dying Shiro begged Rogue to absorb his power and fight her off, across Rogue vol. 3 #7–12 (2005).

Rogue refused until her old friend Blindspot forced the contact she was too frightened to choose. She took Sunfire's solar plasma wholesale — and, exactly as with Carol Danvers years earlier, his personality crossed over with the power and started arguing from inside her head while she burned Deathstrike down.

The strangest part came afterwards. The flames stayed with Rogue long after a normal absorption should have faded, and when the X-Men went back for Shiro, his body had vanished from where they left him — the first hint that the man everyone watched die had cheated the grave after all.

Why It's Obscure

Most borrowed powers fade by breakfast. This one moved in, redecorated, and brought its owner along.

The Cost

Permanent absorption has never once been a clean transaction for Rogue. Danvers left a conscience that fought her for years; Sunfire left a proud, furious voice with opinions about how she used his fire.

The Fire

For a long stretch afterwards, the brawler famous for flight and strength fought wreathed in solar flame instead — a visual spoiler that somebody else's power had taken up residence.
