ROGUE'S FIRST KISS PUT CODY ROBBINS IN A COMA HE NEVER WOKE FROM!

The Featured Fact

In Caldecott County, Mississippi, teenage Anna Marie was sweet on a local boy named Cody Robbins. When she impulsively kissed him, her latent mutant power switched on without any warning: his memories flooded into her mind while his body collapsed beside her. Cody slipped into a coma that no doctor could bring him out of.

That single kiss taught Rogue the rule governing the next decades of her life — bare skin against bare skin meant draining whoever she touched. She took to covering herself completely, gloves included, and the guilt of that first manifestation travelled with her long after Mystique took the runaway in and started aiming her at targets.

The story stayed unfinished business for years. In Rogue #1 (1995) she travelled back to Mississippi specifically to visit Cody, still lying comatose, even while the New Orleans Assassins Guild — led by Gambit's ex-wife Bella Donna Boudreaux — moved against her. Marvel's own reading guide singles out that homecoming as Rogue returning to the boy her powers first hurt.

Why It's Obscure

First, Not Worst

Carol Danvers is Rogue's most famous victim, but Cody came first, years earlier — and unlike Carol he received no resurrection, no new body, and no second act.

The Gloves

Every glove and covered inch in Rogue's classic costume traces back to one Mississippi kiss and a boy who paid for it permanently.
