Rogue — who debuted as a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants villain in Avengers Annual #10 (1981) — went on to lead an Avengers team. In Uncanny Avengers vol. 3 (2015–2017), by Gerry Duggan & Ryan Stegman, she was the field commander of the Avengers Unity Division, the team built to unite mutants, Inhumans, and humans after the Terrigen Mist crisis. Writer Duggan said it plainly: with an aged Steve Rogers no longer in the field every time out, "Rogue is actually the Unity Squad's commander."
The roster she ran reads like a dare: Deadpool, Doctor Voodoo, Quicksilver, Human Torch, Wasp, Cable, and the Inhuman telepath Synapse. Her appointment was symbolic as well as tactical — a mutant leading a unity team while the Terrigen Mist was poisoning mutants worldwide. Under her command the Squad fought the Shredded Man, an Ultron-infested Hank Pym, the Hand's attempt to resurrect the Hulk, and a Red Skull wielding Charles Xavier's stolen brain and psychic powers — a fight that ended with Deadpool jamming one of Magneto's psychic-blocking helmets onto a mind-controlled Rogue so she could knock Skull out and destroy Xavier's brain before it could be misused again.
She even kept the team alive after it was officially killed. When the Rogers who disbanded the Unity Division in Uncanny Avengers vol. 3 #14 (2016, during Civil War II) turned out to be an alternate-reality impostor, Rogue and the Squad simply refused to disband and kept operating. The real Steve Rogers later caught up with her in Uncanny Avengers vol. 3 #29–30 (2017–2018), commended her for keeping the team going unofficially, and asked her to keep leading — and when most Avengers were frozen in amber for Avengers: No Surrender, Rogue, as the highest-ranking Avenger left standing, rallied the Unity Squad, the U.S. Avengers, and every reserve who would answer the call to defend Earth against the Grandmaster and the Challenger.
Why It's Obscure
Ask a casual fan who leads the Avengers and you'll hear Captain America, Iron Man, maybe Thor. Almost nobody says the former Brotherhood villain who can't touch anyone — yet for two years she outranked them all on her own team, and she did it while herding Deadpool.
