ROCKET RACCOON

Today's Fact

The galaxy's loudest raccoon went silent for months in 2019 — and the reason was ticking inside his own skin.

ROCKET'S OWN BODY STARTED KILLING HIM — SO HE HID FROM THE GUARDIANS TO DIE ALONE!
The Featured Fact

When Donny Cates relaunched the Guardians in 2019, Rocket was simply gone — no forwarding address, no farewell, and a team quietly furious about both. The answer arrived in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 5 #7–8 (2019): the laboratory modifications that had rebuilt a Halfworld animal into a weapons savant were coming undone. The decline announced itself with splitting headaches, then patches of fur falling out — the engineered body that had carried him through two Annihilations was revoking its own warranty.

Rocket's response was pure Rocket. Rather than let the people who loved him watch the process, he slipped away in an escape pod without a word and fortified himself on Halfworld, refusing every approach. He told Moondragon plainly that he had not run away to find a cure or another scientist willing to rebuild him. He had run away to hide — to spend whatever time remained somewhere the galaxy's pity could not reach him.

It took Groot to talk him out of the bunker, and pride supplied the transport: Rocket returned to the fight wearing a massive suit of armour that functioned as life support, hiding how frail he had become behind guns and plating. When that suit was smashed in the war with the Universal Church of Truth, Groot answered in kind — growing a new suit out of his own body in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 5 #12 (2019), so that Rocket literally went into his last battle of the run carried by his oldest friend.

Why It's Obscure

Headaches, shedding fur, one escape pod, and a best friend who refused to accept a goodbye delivered by silence.

2019
The Death of Rocket — Marvel billed the arc by name across #7–12, an almost unheard-of spoiler that turned out to be a diagnosis, not a gimmick.
Halfworld
The hiding place — Rocket fortified the planet where he was made, returning to the scene of his creation to wait out its failure.
The armour
Pride, mechanised — the oversized suit was medical equipment wearing a weapons platform as camouflage; frailty was the one intel Rocket would not share.
#12
The Groot suit — when machinery failed, botany volunteered: Groot grew Rocket's replacement life support out of himself.
