Today's Fact
Between galaxy-saving tours, the Guardians' loudest gunner tried the quietest career change in Marvel history.
After Star-Lord's apparent death broke up the Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket Raccoon did something nobody predicted: he got a normal job. In the backup stories of Annihilators Vol. 1 #1–4 (2011), Rocket is working as a mailroom clerk for Timely Inc., sorting packages instead of targets and answering to office routine instead of a Nova Corps dispatcher.
Retirement lasted until a parcel reached his desk containing a killer toy clown — the same breed of automaton horror from his Halfworld past. Rocket quit on the spot, liberated one of Timely's sentient shipping devices to reach an orbital weapons cache, and went looking for the one colleague he trusted with a mystery like this: Groot.
The mailroom chapter matters because it is the hinge into Rocket's darkest homecoming. The clown was bait, the trail led back to Halfworld, and the cosy childhood Rocket remembered there turned out to be a cover story laid over an asylum, a security staff and a psychic prisoner named the Star Thief. The galaxy's most trigger-happy raccoon found all of that because he opened the wrong package at work.
Why It's Obscure
One desk job, one booby-trapped parcel, and the shortest retirement in the Keystone Quadrant.
