Today's Fact
The 'Rocket' was literal once: Halfworld's ranger commuted by footwear and dressed like a storybook hero.
Long before the oversized cannons, Rocket flew on a pair of rocket-powered skates of his own building. In The Incredible Hulk Vol. 1 #271 (1982) and his first solo series, Rocket Raccoon Vol. 1 #1–4 (1985) by Bill Mantlo and a young Mike Mignola, the skates were his signature gear: they launched Halfworld's chief law officer into the air to come crashing down on trouble, and the Halfworld stories treat them as the plain explanation hiding inside his name.
The rest of the kit matched the skates for storybook charm. Early Rocket carried a single small pistol, wore a green uniform with shorts, and in his first design sported a cape — a pulp space-ranger silhouette about as far from a walking armoury as a raccoon can get. The engineering, though, was already his: the skates were home-built, products of the same toy-factory ingenuity that armed Halfworld's caretakers.
As the character hardened into the Guardians of the Galaxy's demolitions expert, the skates quietly vanished from his kit — later reference accounts note flatly that his trademark rocket skates are absent from the modern version. Jetpacks took the sky job, enormous guns took the firepower job, and the most literal superhero footwear in Marvel history retired without a single farewell issue.
Why It's Obscure
Four issues of Mignola art, one pair of skates, and a wardrobe nobody briefed the raccoon about.
