ROCKET MET GROOT AS PRISON CELLMATES — AND HE COULDN'T STAND HIM AT FIRST!
The Featured Fact

Rocket Raccoon and Groot did not meet as bounty-hunting partners or fellow heroes. They met as inmates: thrown into the same Kree prison cell before the events of Annihilation: Conquest — Star-Lord Vol. 1 #1 (2007), the raccoon and the Flora colossus were strangers sharing a cage, and Rocket's first reaction to his new cellmate was pure irritation.

The problem was communication. Groot's entire vocabulary sounded like three repeated words, and Rocket — who prided himself on understanding any system put in front of him — could not crack this one. He kept to his side of the cell and nursed the grudge, right up until prison guards started bullying Groot for the way he talked.

That flipped a switch left over from Rocket's days as Halfworld's security chief. He drove the guards off, Groot built him a bed of leaves in thanks, and when the guards returned for revenge Rocket discovered — mid-fight — that he could suddenly understand every word Groot said. Star-Lord then recruited both prisoners into his expendable strike team, and the partnership that walked out of that cell has never really ended.

Why It's Obscure

The loudest friendship in the galaxy started in a Kree cell, with one partner keeping strictly to his own side of it.

The cell
Strangers, not partners — Rocket and Groot's first shared address was a Kree prison cell, years before the Guardians of the Galaxy existed.
Three words
The language barrier — Rocket initially could not understand Groot at all, and the incomprehension genuinely angered him.
The guards
The turning point — Rocket intervened when guards bullied Groot over his speech; protecting him unlocked Rocket's understanding of it.
2007
Recruited from prison — Star-Lord pulled both cellmates into his Annihilation: Conquest strike team in Star-Lord #1, Groot serving as Rocket's heavy-ordnance transport.
