Today's Fact

Long before the Guardians, Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen slipped a talking raccoon named simply Rocky into the back-up feature 'The Sword in the Star' in Marvel Preview #7 (1976), where he guided the hero Prince Wayfinder across the forest world of Witch-World.
That first Rocky was nothing like the snarling gunner readers know now: he puffed on a tobacco pipe, blew smoke rings, and chatted away in cheery British slang — 'jolly good,' 'old bean' and all — a personality that quietly vanished from every later appearance.
Mantlo brought him back six years later in The Incredible Hulk #271 (1982), revealing that 'Rocky' was short for Rocket and installing him as chief law officer of Halfworld. In the afterword to Rocket Raccoon #1 (1985), Mantlo confirmed in print that the pipe-smoking guide and the cosmic lawman were one and the same animal.
Why It's Obscure
The loudest mouth in the Guardians began life as a polite English tour guide in a black-and-white magazine almost nobody bought.
