Today's Fact
Every villain in the Acts of Vengeance cabal wanted a hero dead. One of them had older business.
During the Acts of Vengeance conspiracy, Loki seated Marvel's arch-villains at one table and asked each to destroy a hero outside their usual rivalry — and Magneto accepted a seat beside the Red Skull. For Erik Lehnsherr, a Holocaust survivor whose parents were murdered in the camps, the alliance was never strategy. In Captain America Vol. 1 #367 (1990) he stormed the Skull's Washington headquarters at the Smith Building, smashed through robots, decoys and escape routes, and took Johann Schmidt alive.
Then came the sentence. Magneto carried the Skull to an abandoned underground fallout shelter, sealed him inside, and removed the ladder — leaving the architect of Nazi terror alone in the dark with a supply of water and absolutely nothing else. No guards to bribe, no weapon to improvise, no audience to perform for. It was engineered as the precise inverse of Schmidt's own machinery of cruelty: isolation, helplessness, and unlimited time to inventory what he had done to other people.
The punishment nearly worked as a death sentence by despair. When the Skeleton Crew finally located and dug out their master in the backup story running through Captain America Vol. 1 #369–370 (1990), Schmidt emerged alive but hollow — starved, unhinged by solitude, and asking to be taken home to die. Captain America never threw the punch that humbled the Red Skull that year. A survivor simply locked the door of history's smallest courtroom and walked away.
Why It's Obscure
A team-up that lasted one meeting, an imprisonment measured in water rations, and a rescue that found a broken man.
