Today's Fact

Schmidt's most personal theft was not a weapon or a country — it was his enemy's face, strength and serum, grown in a lab.

THE RED SKULL DIED — AND WOKE UP INSIDE CAPTAIN AMERICA'S BODY!
The Featured Fact

When age and a final duel with Captain America killed Johann Schmidt's original body in Captain America Vol. 1 #300 (1984), geneticist Arnim Zola caught the falling mind. Zola had taken samples of Steve Rogers' blood years earlier, grew a clone body from them — Super-Soldier Serum effects included — and transplanted Schmidt's consciousness into it at the moment of death.

The resurrection stayed secret for five years of publication time. Schmidt lived quietly under the anglicised name John Smith, rebuilt his network from inside American institutions, and pulled the strings that pushed Rogers out of the Captain America role in favour of John Walker. The reveal landed in the giant-sized Captain America Vol. 1 #350 (1989), where Rogers finally faced an enemy wearing his own younger face.

The borrowed face did not survive the issue. During the confrontation Schmidt was exposed to his own signature weapon, the Dust of Death, and the clone's handsome features collapsed into the familiar crimson skull — the one change that made the new body truly his. From then on, Marvel's most committed Nazi was quite literally powered by Captain America's blood.

Why It's Obscure

A borrowed body, a borrowed name, and a poison that gave the game away.

John Smith
The quiet years — Schmidt's alias was simply his own name translated, hidden in the plainest sight America offers.
#300
Death, outsourced — Zola's transplant turned Schmidt's death in 1984 into a change of address rather than an ending.
#350
Cap versus Cap — the anniversary issue staged Rogers against his own clone, with the Commission's replacement caught between them.
The Dust
Hoist by his own weapon — the Dust of Death scarred the clone's face into a red skull, ending any chance of passing for Rogers.
