Today's Fact

For months the Pentagon's loudest hardliner was a Nazi in a lifelike mask, signing orders with an anagram.

THE RED SKULL BECAME U.S. SECRETARY OF DEFENSE — HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT AS 'DELL RUSK'!
The Featured Fact

America's Secretary of Defense in 2003 was a courteous hardliner named Dell Rusk — and every letter of that name was a confession. Rearrange them and they spell Red Skull. Behind a lifelike mask, Johann Schmidt sat inside the Pentagon itself, running the Red Zone crisis in Avengers Vol. 3 #65–70 (2003), with the unmasking landing in issue #68.

Rusk spent his tenure squeezing the Avengers' own liaison, Henry Gyrich, for classified team data while publicly hamstringing the heroes sent to contain a flesh-eating bioweapon spilling out of Mount Rushmore. The weapon was his: Schmidt planned to let the Red Zone kill indiscriminately, then pin the atrocity on Wakanda and ignite a war that would leave his adopted country grateful, frightened, and easy to steer.

Gyrich finally clocked the anagram on Rusk's nameplate, recorded the Secretary's boasts as evidence, and was shot for his trouble — in the leg, by the Secretary of Defense personally. The Falcon smuggled the recording out, Black Panther beat Schmidt senseless with his bare hands once the mask came off, and the Avengers learned their government had been taking orders from the man Captain America has fought since 1941.

Why It's Obscure

Schmidt did not storm the gates of American power; he filed the paperwork, passed the background check, and waited to be sworn in.

2003
An anagram in office — Dell Rusk is Red Skull with the letters shuffled, a signature Schmidt was too vain to leave off his own alias.
#65–70
The Red Zone arc — Geoff Johns' Avengers storyline opens with red gas pouring from Mount Rushmore and ends with the Secretary exposed as the saboteur.
Gyrich
The leak who leaked back — Henry Gyrich, the Avengers' government liaison, recorded Rusk's confession and took a bullet in the leg delivering it.
Wakanda
The war that wasn't — Schmidt meant to frame Wakanda for the bioweapon so America would beg its secret Nazi Secretary for protection.
