Today's Fact

Schmidt wanted a male heir, got a daughter instead, and solved the disappointment with indoctrination and an aging machine.

THE RED SKULL AGED HIS OWN DAUGHTER INTO A WEAPON — SIN BEGAN AS MOTHER SUPERIOR!
The Featured Fact

Seeking an heir, Johann Schmidt fathered a daughter, Sinthea, whose mother died in childbirth. Disgusted that the child was a girl rather than the son he wanted, Schmidt nearly killed the infant on the spot, and relented only when his follower Susan Scarbo volunteered to raise the girl herself. Sinthea's first appearance, as an adult, came in Captain America Vol. 1 #290 (1984), by J. M. DeMatteis and Paul Neary.

Scarbo brought Sinthea up steeped in her father's doctrine. When Schmidt returned during the girl's adolescence, he put her through a process that artificially aged her into her early thirties and granted her psionic powers, while her mind stayed that of a teenager. Rechristened Mother Superior, she was placed in command of the Sisters of Sin, orphan girls given the same accelerated aging and indoctrination treatment.

Mother Superior's campaign against Captain America ended inside a chamber built to reverse Schmidt's aging process. The machinery restored an aged Rogers to normal and, in the same wash of energy, reverted Sinthea and her Sisters back into children. The de-aged girl eventually resurfaced under a shorter name — Sin — and grew into the lieutenant who would one day wear a red skull face of her own.

Why It's Obscure

Most accounts of Schmidt's family start with Sin already grown and armed, skipping the childhood that was stolen from her twice, once by each direction of the same machine.

1984
Debuted as the lieutenant, explained later — Sinthea arrived in Captain America #290 already adult and powered as Mother Superior; the flashbacks revealing her birth and forced aging unfolded across the issues that followed.
The Sisters of Sin
Her method, copied downward — Schmidt had Sinthea raise a squad of orphan girls, accelerate them into adulthood and arm them with psionic abilities, replicating her own upbringing as a production line.
A teenager's mind
Aged body, unaged judgment — The process pushed Sinthea's body into its thirties while leaving her adolescent mind in charge, a mismatch Marvel's own history of the character spells out.
Reversed
Childhood, returned by accident — Sinthea regained her youth only because she charged into the de-aging chamber after Rogers; she later complained she had been reverted to the wrong age.
