Captain America was not the only man the Second World War put on ice. In the conflict’s final days, Johann Schmidt fought Rogers inside his hidden bunker beneath Berlin, and the structure came down on top of him mid-battle. Falling support beams, of all unglamorous things, saved his life: they held the rubble off his body instead of letting it crush him flat.
What the collapse did release was an experimental gas stored in the bunker, and breathing it dropped Schmidt into suspended animation — no ageing, no waking, a tyrant paused between heartbeats while the world rebuilt itself above him. He stayed down there for roughly two decades, until A.I.M. located the bunker and hauled him into the modern era, a revival laid out in Tales of Suspense #79 (1966).
The gas sent a delayed invoice. Its after-effects lingered in Schmidt’s system and, years later, began killing the original body it had preserved — the slow poisoning that pushed Arnim Zola toward the clone gambit and set the Skull’s long second career in motion. His miracle preservative and his death sentence turned out to be the same lungful of air.
Why It's Obscure
Two decades of world history happened over his head; the bunker’s gas bill arrived much later, with interest.
