The Featured Fact

During Avengers: No Surrender, two cosmic gamblers froze most of Earth's heroes as pieces in a contest for the planet. Chasing the game at full stretch in Quicksilver: No Surrender Vol. 1 #1 (2018), by Saladin Ahmed and Eric Nguyen, Pietro Maximoff pushed past his own limit and slipped between moments — the entire world locked motionless around him, and the only other things moving in the stillness were glowing energy creatures quietly murdering frozen people.

Near Mount Rushmore, Pietro found two boys about to smash a turtle they had stuffed in a snack bag labelled Cheese Dibbles. He took the turtle, named it Mister Dibbles, and carried it everywhere, narrating his exile to it out loud just to hear a plan spoken. When his sister Wanda briefly breached the frozen moment, the one kindness she managed was to unfreeze the turtle too, so at least one living thing could move beside him.

The creatures, Pietro finally understood, were fed by his own buried hurt, and the way out was to stop feeding them. Before his last stand he left Mister Dibbles beside the pond behind Avengers Mansion, where butler Jarvis would find it. Pietro broke back into moving time — and Jarvis duly returned the turtle, fed and lively, to a speedster who celebrated over shawarma with his sister and his extremely patient pet.

Named off a snack bag — Pietro christened his rescue after the Cheese Dibbles packaging it was found in, then talked to it for five issues straight.

The way home — Wanda's advice was peace, not speed: Pietro let go of the hurt powering his pursuers and stepped back into a world that moved.
